Blastulation: Formation of the Blastula in Early Embryo

Blastulation is the early embryonic stage when a solid ball of cells rearranges into a hollow ball called the blastula. Inside the blastula is a fluid-filled cavity, and the outer layer is made of cells that will later form the body. It comes right after cleavage and morula formation.

This stage matters because it is the first time the embryo creates an inside space and starts organising cells into positions. Without a proper blastula, the next stage, gastrulation, cannot happen correctly, and the embryo cannot develop into a complete animal.

Key Concepts

  • Blastula: A hollow sphere of cells formed during early development.
  • Blastocoel: The fluid-filled cavity inside the blastula.
  • Blastoderm: The single layer of cells surrounding the blastocoel.
  • Blastocyst: The mammalian blastula, with an inner cell mass and outer trophoblast.
  • Inner Cell Mass: Cells that will form the actual embryo in mammals.

How It Works

  1. Cleavage produces a solid morula of 16-32 small cells.
  2. Cells start pumping sodium ions inward, and water follows by osmosis.
  3. A small cavity appears between cells and slowly enlarges.
  4. Cells arrange themselves into a single outer layer around this cavity.
  5. The hollow structure is now a blastula with a clear blastocoel.
  6. In mammals, cells differentiate into outer trophoblast and inner cell mass, forming a blastocyst.
  7. The blastocyst hatches from zona pellucida and gets ready for implantation.

Worked Example

A human blastocyst has about 200 cells on day 5. If the inner cell mass has 30 cells, what percentage of cells will form the embryo proper?

  1. Total cells = 200.
  2. Inner cell mass cells = 30.
  3. Percentage = (30 / 200) x 100 = 15 percent.
  4. The remaining 85 percent are trophoblast cells that mainly form placenta and supporting tissues.

Common Misconceptions

  • Blastula is a solid ball: Wrong. Morula is solid; blastula is hollow with a blastocoel.
  • Blastula is the same in all animals in size and shape: Wrong. Its form varies with yolk amount; frog, chick, and human blastulas look different.
  • All blastula cells become the baby: Wrong. In mammals, only the inner cell mass forms the embryo; trophoblast forms extra-embryonic tissues.

Real-World Applications

  • IVF clinics culture embryos to blastocyst stage (day 5) before transfer for better success.
  • Embryonic stem cells are obtained from the inner cell mass of blastocysts for research.
  • Studying blastulation helps in understanding implantation failure and early pregnancy loss.

Blastulation turns a solid morula into a hollow blastula with a blastocoel and organised cell layers. It prepares the embryo for implantation and the next major reshaping in gastrulation.
