Epithelial Tissue and Its Types: Simple and Compound
Every surface of our body and every internal tube is covered by a sheet of cells called epithelial tissue. Skin, lining of the mouth, gut, lungs and glands are all epithelial. It acts like a protective cover and a smart gate.
Epithelial tissue matters because it protects us from injury and germs, absorbs food and water, secretes mucus, enzymes and hormones, and helps in sensation. Without it, digestion, breathing and protection would fail.
Key Concepts
Epithelial cells are tightly packed with very little space between them and rest on a basement membrane. They have no direct blood supply and get nutrition by diffusion. Based on layers, epithelium is simple (one layer) or compound/stratified (many layers). Based on cell shape: squamous (flat), cuboidal (cube-like) and columnar (tall). Ciliated epithelium has hair-like cilia that move mucus or particles. Glandular epithelium forms glands.
How It Works
- Simple squamous epithelium: single layer of flat cells in alveoli of lungs and blood vessels; allows easy diffusion of gases and substances.
- Simple cuboidal epithelium: cube cells in kidney tubules and glands; helps absorption and secretion.
- Simple columnar epithelium: tall cells in stomach and intestine; absorbs nutrients and secretes mucus and enzymes. Microvilli increase surface area.
- Ciliated epithelium: in trachea and fallopian tubes; cilia push mucus, dust or egg in one direction.
- Compound epithelium: many layers in skin, mouth and oesophagus; protects against wear, friction and drying.
Worked Example
Suppose the inner lining of intestine needs absorption. A flat single layer would allow diffusion but poor secretion. The intestine uses simple columnar epithelium with microvilli. If each microvillus increases surface, thousands together greatly increase area. Imagine a smooth tube area of 1 unit becomes about 20 times more with folds and microvilli. More area means more glucose, amino acids and water absorbed from same food, step by step increasing efficiency.
Common Misconceptions
- Epithelial tissue has many blood vessels. It is avascular; cells receive nutrients by diffusion from underlying connective tissue.
- All epithelium is only for protection. Some types mainly absorb (intestine) or secrete (glands) or help movement (ciliated).
- Skin is only one layer. Skin epidermis is compound epithelium with many layers for protection.
Real-World Applications
Burns damage epithelial cover and increase infection and water loss, so treatment protects the surface. Inhalers work across alveolar squamous epithelium. Kidney dialysis depends on understanding cuboidal tubule function. Cancers of epithelium (carcinomas) are common because these cells divide often.
Epithelial tissue is the body's covering and lining system. Its shape and layers perfectly match jobs like diffusion, absorption, secretion and protection.
