Range & Interquartile Range: Spread Measures Explained

The range is the simplest measure of spread: the maximum value minus the minimum. The interquartile range (IQR) is the spread of the middle half of the data: the third quartile minus the first quartile (Q3 − Q1).

They matter because two classes can have the same average marks but wildly different consistency. The range gives a quick overall span, while the IQR describes the typical spread after ignoring the most extreme quarter on each side.

Key Concepts

Range: max − min; uses only two values, so one outlier can inflate it badly. IQR: Q3 − Q1; covers the middle 50% of observations and resists outliers. Quartile deviation (semi-IQR): IQR/2, a compact companion measure. Outlier rule: values below Q1 − 1.5·IQR or above Q3 + 1.5·IQR are flagged as outliers — the standard box-plot rule.

Formulas

Range: R = x_max − x_min. IQR: IQR = Q3 − Q1. Quartile deviation: QD = (Q3 − Q1)/2. Coefficient of quartile deviation: (Q3 − Q1)/(Q3 + Q1), a unit-free relative measure. Outlier fences: lower = Q1 − 1.5·IQR, upper = Q3 + 1.5·IQR. Units are the units of the data, except the coefficient which is unit-free.

Worked Example

Marks: 42, 48, 55, 58, 61, 66, 73, plus one stray entry of 150 (a data-entry error). Range with error: 150 − 42 = 108 — misleading. Quartiles: n = 8; Q1 at (8+1)/4 = 2.25th → between 48 and 55: 48 + 0.25×7 = 49.75; Q3 at 6.75th → between 66 and 73: 66 + 0.75×7 = 71.25. IQR: 71.25 − 49.75 = 21.5 — the middle half spans about 21.5 marks. Outlier check: upper fence = 71.25 + 1.5×21.5 = 103.5; 150 exceeds it, so it is flagged as an outlier and should be corrected. The IQR barely moved while the range exploded — that is exactly why the IQR is trusted.

Common Misconceptions

1. "A bigger range always means more spread overall." The range only reflects the two extremes; the bulk of the data could be tightly packed. 2. "IQR and range measure the same thing." The IQR deliberately ignores the outer 50%, making it robust; the range is fragile. 3. "The 1.5·IQR rule deletes data." It only flags suspicious values for investigation — deletion needs a real reason like a recording error.

Real-World Applications

The range gives quick spans like daily temperature range or the price range of a product line. The IQR underlies box plots in every data-science report, flags outliers in lab measurements, compares salary consistency across departments, and sets quality-control limits on production lines.

The range (max − min) is the fastest spread measure but hostage to outliers; the interquartile range (Q3 − Q1) captures the middle 50% and stays stable. Together with the 1.5·IQR outlier rule they form the standard first toolkit for judging how scattered data really is.
