Surface Area of Cones: Formula, Curved Area & Examples

A cone is the shape of an ice-cream cone, a funnel or a traffic cone: a circular base that tapers smoothly up to a single point called the vertex. The straight line from the vertex to the centre of the base is the vertical height h, while the line from the vertex to any point on the rim of the base is the slant height l. Surface-area questions about cones almost always need the slant height, which is found with the Pythagoras theorem.

Cones matter because many containers and roofs are conical. Funnels, conical tents, megaphones and party hats are all designed with these formulas. The curved surface area (CSA) tells you how much material covers the sloping side, and the total surface area (TSA) adds the circular base when the cone is closed at the bottom.

Key Concepts

  • Radius (r): the radius of the circular base.
  • Vertical height (h): the perpendicular distance from the vertex to the centre of the base.
  • Slant height (l): the distance from the vertex to any point on the rim of the base, found by l = √(h² + r²).
  • Curved surface area (CSA): the area of the sloping side only.
  • Total surface area (TSA): the CSA plus the base area. All answers are in square units.

Formulas

  • Slant height: l = √(h² + r²). This follows from the right triangle formed by the height, the radius and the slant edge, so the cone must be a right circular cone.
  • CSA: πrl — imagine the curved surface unwrapped into a sector of a circle of radius l.
  • TSA: πrl + πr² = πr(l + r) — curved area plus the circular base.
  • If the base is open (a funnel), only the CSA counts as the total material.

Worked Example

Find the CSA and TSA of a cone with radius 3 cm and vertical height 4 cm. Use π = 3.14.

  1. First find the slant height: l = √(h² + r²) = √(16 + 9) = √25 = 5 cm.
  2. CSA = πrl = 3.14 × 3 × 5 = 3.14 × 15 = 47.1. The CSA is 47.1 cm².
  3. Base area = πr² = 3.14 × 9 = 28.26 cm².
  4. TSA = 47.1 + 28.26 = 75.36. The total surface area is 75.36 cm².
  5. Check: πr(l + r) = 3.14 × 3 × 8 = 3.14 × 24 = 75.36, which matches.

Common Misconceptions

  • Using the vertical height h in πrl: the curved area needs the slant height l, not h. Always compute l = √(h² + r²) first.
  • Writing l = h + r: the slant height is the hypotenuse of a right triangle, never the sum of the two legs.
  • Adding the base when it is open: a funnel or a party hat has no base circle, so the material is just the CSA.

Real-World Applications

  • Designing funnels, megaphones and traffic cones.
  • Calculating the canvas needed for conical tents.
  • Manufacturing ice-cream cones and paper party hats.
  • Estimating material for conical roofs and storage hoppers.

The slant height l = √(h² + r²) is the gateway to every cone formula: the curved surface area is πrl and the total surface area is πr(l + r). Find l first, never substitute h into the area formulas, and add the base only when the cone is actually closed.
