Trigonometric Ratios in a Right Triangle: SOH CAH TOA Guide

In a right-angled triangle, the six trigonometric ratios describe the relationship between an acute angle and the sides around it. For an angle θ: sin θ = opposite/hypotenuse, cos θ = adjacent/hypotenuse, and tan θ = opposite/adjacent. The other three, cosecant, secant and cotangent, are the reciprocals of these.

These ratios matter because they are the bridge between angles and lengths. Once you know one angle and one side of a right triangle, the ratios unlock every other side and angle, which is why trigonometry starts here and goes everywhere.

Key Concepts

  • Hypotenuse: the side opposite the right angle; always the longest side of the triangle.
  • Opposite side: the side across from the angle θ you are working with.
  • Adjacent side: the side next to θ that is not the hypotenuse. Opposite and adjacent swap if you switch to the other acute angle.
  • SOH CAH TOA: the memory aid: Sine = Opposite/Hypotenuse, Cosine = Adjacent/Hypotenuse, Tangent = Opposite/Adjacent.
  • Reciprocals: cosec θ = 1/sin θ, sec θ = 1/cos θ, cot θ = 1/tan θ.

Formulas

  • Definitions: sin θ = O/H, cos θ = A/H, tan θ = O/A, where O, A, H are the opposite, adjacent and hypotenuse.
  • Quotient relation: tan θ = sin θ / cos θ.
  • Pythagoras link: sin²θ + cos²θ = 1, which follows from O² + A² = H² divided by H².
  • Assumptions: θ is an acute angle (between 0° and 90°); ratios are pure numbers with no units.

Worked Example

A right triangle has, for angle θ, opposite side 3, adjacent side 4 and hypotenuse 5. Find sin θ, cos θ and tan θ.

  1. sin θ = opposite/hypotenuse = 3/5 = 0.6.
  2. cos θ = adjacent/hypotenuse = 4/5 = 0.8.
  3. tan θ = opposite/adjacent = 3/4 = 0.75.
  4. Cross-check with the quotient relation: sin θ / cos θ = 0.6 / 0.8 = 0.75 = tan θ.
  5. Cross-check with the Pythagoras link: sin²θ + cos²θ = 0.36 + 0.64 = 1. Both checks pass, so the ratios are correct.

Common Misconceptions

  • Opposite and adjacent are not fixed labels. They depend on which acute angle you pick; swap the angle and the two legs swap roles.
  • SOH CAH TOA works only in right triangles. Applying these definitions to other triangles gives wrong answers.
  • The hypotenuse is always opposite the right angle, never one of the legs, no matter how the triangle is drawn or rotated.

Real-World Applications

  • Heights and distances: finding the height of a tower from its angle of elevation and ground distance.
  • Navigation: resolving a journey into north-south and east-west components.
  • Physics: splitting a force into horizontal and vertical components on an inclined plane.
  • Construction: setting roof slopes and stair angles from required rises and runs.

Trigonometric ratios in a right triangle are just three fractions: opposite, adjacent and hypotenuse combined as SOH CAH TOA. Label the sides relative to your angle, write the correct fraction, and verify with tan θ = sin θ / cos θ.
