Particle Accelerators: Cyclotron to Synchrotron A Complete
A particle accelerator gives charged particles enormous energies using electric fields to push and magnetic fields to steer. Lawrence's 1932 cyclotron was the first practical one — small enough to hold — and it opened the era of smashing atoms to look inside them.
Fast particles probe smaller distances, create new particles from pure energy (E = mc²), and produce medical isotopes and cancer beams. Three designs — cyclotron, synchrocyclotron, synchrotron — show how each generation beat the last one's limits.
Key Concepts
- Cyclotron: uniform B field plus two D-shaped "dees" with alternating voltage; particles spiral out, gaining energy each half-turn.
- Resonance: the voltage must flip at the orbital frequency f = qB/(2πm), independent of speed and radius (nonrelativistic).
- Relativistic limit: near light speed the effective mass grows, the frequency drops, and sync is lost — a ~20–25 MeV ceiling for protons.
- Synchrocyclotron: varies the RF frequency downward to stay in step, reaching hundreds of MeV in pulses.
- Synchrotron: ramps B with momentum so particles orbit at fixed radius — the route to TeV energies (LHC: 7 TeV protons).
Formulas
f = qB/(2πm) and orbit radius r = mv/(qB) give the energy limit for dee radius R: K_max = q²B²R²/(2m) (nonrelativistic, radiation losses neglected).
A synchrotron keeps p = qBR at fixed R, so its magnets must ramp in step with momentum — its defining trick.
Worked Example
Proton cyclotron with B = 1.0 T, R = 0.50 m.
- f = qB/(2πm) = 1.602×10⁻¹⁹/(2π × 1.6726×10⁻²⁷) ≈ 15.2 MHz.
- K_max = (1.602×10⁻¹⁹)² × 0.25/(2 × 1.6726×10⁻²⁷) = 6.416×10⁻³⁹/3.3452×10⁻²⁷ = 1.918×10⁻¹² J.
- In eV: 1.918×10⁻¹²/1.602×10⁻¹⁹ ≈ 1.20×10⁷ eV ≈ 12 MeV — enough to make PET isotope fluorine-18.
Common Misconceptions
- "More voltage always means more energy." The cyclotron limit is magnetic size and relativity; synchrotrons reuse modest voltages over millions of turns.
- "Accelerators are only for weapons or abstract physics." Most are industrial or medical: chip doping, cancer therapy, sterilising equipment.
- "Particles exceed light speed." Never — energy feeds relativistic mass; LHC protons reach 0.999999991c, still below c.
Real-World Applications
- Medicine: cyclotrons make fluorine-18 for PET; synchrotrons deliver proton/carbon therapy beams.
- Discovery: the LHC ring found the Higgs boson in 2012.
- Materials: synchrotron X-rays reveal protein structures and new materials.
- Industry: electron beams sterilise syringes and cross-link polymers.
Push with electricity, steer with magnetism, keep the timing perfect — from Lawrence's brass prototype to the 27-km LHC, every accelerator is a new answer to how particles can go ever faster.
