Properties and Speed of EM Waves: What Maxwell Revealed

Electromagnetic waves are travelling disturbances of electric and magnetic fields that carry energy through space without needing a material medium. James Clerk Maxwell showed in the 1860s that changing electric fields create magnetic fields and changing magnetic fields create electric fields, so the wave sustains itself.

This idea united electricity, magnetism and optics. It explained why light has a fixed speed in vacuum and predicted radio waves before they were detected in the laboratory.

Key Concepts

An EM wave has an electric field E measured in volts per metre (V/m) and a magnetic field B measured in tesla (T). The fields oscillate at right angles to each other and to the direction of travel. In vacuum the wave is transverse and needs no medium. Maxwell added the displacement current term to Ampère law, which allowed a changing electric field in empty space to act as a source of magnetic field. From his equations he obtained a wave speed depending only on two constants of vacuum: permittivity ε0 and permeability μ0.

Formulas

c = 1 / √(ε0 μ0), where c is in m/s, ε0 = 8.854 × 10^-12 C^2/(N m^2) and μ0 = 4π × 10^-7 N/A^2. The result is c = 3 × 10^8 m/s. Also c = f λ and E = c B for a plane wave in vacuum, with E in V/m and B in T. These relations hold in vacuum; in a material the speed is lower and depends on the material properties.

Worked Example

Calculate c from ε0 and μ0. Step 1: Multiply ε0 μ0 = (8.854 × 10^-12) × (4π × 10^-7) = (8.854 × 10^-12) × (1.257 × 10^-6) = 1.113 × 10^-17. Step 2: Take square root: √(1.113 × 10^-17) = 3.336 × 10^-9. Step 3: Invert: 1 / (3.336 × 10^-9) = 3.00 × 10^8 m/s. This matches the measured speed of light, a strong sign that light is an EM wave. If E = 300 V/m, then B = E / c = 300 / (3 × 10^8) = 1.0 × 10^-6 T.

Common Misconceptions

  • EM waves do not need air. They travel best in vacuum and slower in glass or water.
  • The electric and magnetic fields are not separate waves. They are two parts of one wave, in phase in vacuum.
  • Maxwell did not invent radio by building a transmitter. He predicted the waves mathematically; Hertz later produced and detected them.

Real-World Applications

  • Radio, television and mobile networks use the waves Maxwell predicted.
  • Fibre optics and lasers rely on light behaving as an EM wave at speed close to c in the material.
  • Medical imaging, remote sensing and astronomy all detect EM waves from different bands.

Maxwell revealed that light is an electromagnetic wave with a fixed vacuum speed set by ε0 and μ0. That single result connected optics with electricity and magnetism and opened the way to wireless technology.
