Sturtevant, Morgan's 19-year-old student, made the first gene map in 1911 — from recombination percentages between Drosophila genes, drawn on a scrap of paper in one night. Modern genome sequencing still uses his logic: recombination frequency = map distance. Cystic fibrosis gene was found (1989) by mapping it to chromosome 7 before anyone knew its sequence.
