Study notes
Let's trace the Carius Method for Chlorine: Step 1: Take 0.2g of an organic compound. Step 2: Heat it in a Carius tube with silver nitrate (AgNO3). Step 3: Chlorine reacts to form AgCl (silver chloride). Step 4: Collect the solid AgCl and weigh it. Suppose you get 0.287g of AgCl. Step 5: Since the molar mass of AgCl is 143.5g/mol and Chlorine is 35.5g/mol, you calculate: Percentage of Chlorine = (35.5 / 143.5) * (weight of AgCl / weight of organic compound) * 100. Step 6: Calculation = (35.5 / 143.5) * (0.287 / 0.2) * 100 = 35.5%. This tells us our sample was 35.5% chlorine.
