Nitric acid: Ostwald's process
Industrial Chemistry · Chemistry
Study notes
Let's trace the journey of an ammonia molecule through the Ostwald Process: 1. Entry: Ammonia (NH3) enters the reactor. 2. Catalyst stage: It hits the glowing Platinum gauze at 800 degrees and joins with Oxygen to become Nitric Oxide (NO). 3. Cooling stage: The NO cools and grabs more Oxygen to turn into Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2). 4. Final stage: The NO2 gas enters the absorption tower, gets sprinkled with water, and dissolves to become liquid Nitric Acid (HNO3).
