Study notes
Let's look at CoCl3·6NH3. Step 1: The central metal is Cobalt (Co). Step 2: There are 6 Ammonia (NH3) molecules directly attached to Cobalt. This is the Secondary Valency (Coordination Number = 6). Step 3: These 6 bonds are non-ionizable, meaning they don't break in water. Step 4: There are 3 Chlorine (Cl) atoms on the outside. These are ionizable and satisfy the Primary Valency (Oxidation state = +3). Step 5: If you put this in water, it breaks into [Co(NH3)6]3+ and 3Cl- ions. This gives 4 total ions.
