Bite mark analysis basics

Forensic Odontology · Dental (BDS)

Study notes

A bite mark is the only evidence against a suspect. Why is conviction unsafe on it alone? Skin distorts, marks fade, and uniqueness claims lack scientific validation - courts have seen wrongful convictions from overstated bite-mark testimony. Students learn the cautionary tale: forensic dentistry's credibility rests on validated methods (identification, age estimation) - bite-mark analysis is taught as history and warning, not a reliable tool.
