Malocclusion: Angle's classification, Ackerman-Proffit system
Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
A patient has a large overjet with upper front teeth flared forward. What Angle class is this? Angle's Class II division 1 — the lower molars sit behind their normal position relative to upper (distocclusion), and the upper incisors flare forward, creating the overjet. Division 2 would have the incisors tilted backward instead. Students learn this pattern recognition because the classification directly suggests the treatment direction (in this case, addressing the sagittal jaw discrepancy and incisor proclination).
