Osseointegration: biology and biomechanics
Implantology Basics · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
An implant loaded heavily on day one becomes mobile. Why? Premature overload disrupts the fragile clot-to-woven-bone sequence - micromovement beyond ~150 microns invites fibrous encapsulation instead of bone. Students learn the biology's patience: osseointegration is a 6-12 week bone-healing race; stability protects the clot, controlled loading later stimulates remodeling - rushing the biology loses the implant.
