Pigmented lesions of oral cavity
Oral Medicine and Radiology · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
A dark gingival band is symmetric in a young patient. Why is this likely physiologic? Racial melanin pigmentation is bilateral, symmetric, stable since childhood - versus melanoma's asymmetry and change. Students learn the symmetry test: physiologic pigmentation mirrors itself; pathology doesn't - and any pigmented lesion that changes, ulcerates, or can't be identified gets biopsied regardless of symmetry.
