Study notes
A tired teenage girl is pale; labs show hemoglobin 8 g/dL, small red cells. This is iron-deficiency anemia — the commonest kind. Without iron, hemoglobin synthesis falters, red cells come out small (microcytic) and pale (hypochromic), and oxygen delivery drops — fatigue, pallor, breathlessness on exertion. In teenage girls, menstrual blood loss plus poor dietary iron is the classic cause. Iron studies confirm it; iron replacement plus dietary correction treats it — but the cause of loss must be found.
