Study notes
A pathologist sees tall cells with mucus-secreting goblet cells in a biopsy. This is simple columnar epithelium — the signature lining of the intestine. The tall cells absorb nutrients; goblet cells secrete mucus that lubricates and protects. Finding this pattern in the esophagus (Barrett's esophagus) is abnormal and precancerous — tissue identity under the microscope directly changes the diagnosis.
