Consider a particle in a box with two possible states: |up> and |down>. Let's find the inner product of the state |A> = |up> with itself. Step 1: Write the bra corresponding to |A>. Since |A> = |up>, the bra is <A| = <up|. Step 2: Set up the inner product: <A|A>. Step 3: Substitute the kets: <up|up>. Step 4: Since |up> is a normalized state (meaning its length is 1), the inner product of a state with itself is 1. Therefore, <up|up> = 1. This confirms that the state is valid and normalized. Now, let's find the inner product of |up> and |down>. Step 1: Write the bra for |up>: <up|. Step 2: Set up the product: <up|down>. Step 3: Since |up> and |down> are orthogonal (perpendicular) states, they have no overlap. Step 4: The result is 0. <up|down> = 0. This means if the particle is in the 'up' state, there is zero probability of finding it in the 'down' state.
