Study notes
Step 1: A 10 nm gold cube vs a 1 cm gold cube: compare surface-to-volume ratios. Step 2: Cube S/V = 6/L. For L = 10 nm = 1×10⁻⁸ m: S/V = 6×10⁸ m⁻¹. Step 3: For L = 1 cm = 0.01 m: S/V = 600 m⁻¹. Step 4: Ratio = 10⁶ — a million times more surface per volume at the nanoscale. Step 5: Consequence: nanogold is a superb catalyst (reactions happen on surfaces) while bulk gold is famously inert; and 20 nm gold particles look ruby red (plasmon resonance ~520 nm), not golden. Result: Shrinking to the nanoscale multiplies surface atoms ~10⁶-fold, flipping chemical and optical behaviour — the heart of nanoscience.
