Study notes

Worked example - where does the Stokes line appear? A 532 nm green laser excites carbon tetrachloride, whose strong Raman mode is at 459 cm^-1. Step 1: laser wavenumber = 1/(532 x 10^-7 cm) = 18,797 cm^-1. Step 2: Stokes photon loses 459 cm^-1: 18,797 - 459 = 18,338 cm^-1. Step 3: wavelength = 1/18,338 cm = 5.453 x 10^-5 cm = 545.3 nm (yellow-green). So you look for a new line at 545.3 nm - its shift from 532 nm fingerprints CCl4. The anti-Stokes partner would appear at 18,797 + 459 = 19,256 cm^-1 = 519.3 nm, much weaker at room temperature.
