Study notes
In a resonance tube experiment, a tuning fork of frequency 512 Hz gives the first resonance at air-column length L1 = 16.0 cm and the second resonance at L2 = 50.0 cm. Calculate (a) the wavelength of sound, (b) the speed of sound in air, (c) the end correction. Solution: (a) lambda = 2(L2 - L1) = 2(50.0 - 16.0) = 68.0 cm = 0.680 m. (b) v = f lambda = 512 x 0.680 = 348 m/s. (c) e = (L2 - 3L1)/2 = (50.0 - 48.0)/2 = 1.0 cm.
