Study notes

A tangential force of 5000 N is applied to the top face (area 0.1 m²) of a metal block 0.2 m tall, and the top shifts sideways by 1 mm. Find the shear modulus. Step 1: Shearing stress = F/A = 5000 / 0.1 = 50,000 Pa. Step 2: Shearing strain = shift / height = 0.001 / 0.2 = 0.005. Step 3: G = stress / strain = 50,000 / 0.005 = 1.0 × 10⁷ Pa. Answer: G ≈ 1 × 10⁷ Pa. This is much smaller than steel's 8 × 10¹⁰ Pa, so this block is a soft material — perhaps a hard rubber or soft alloy.
