Fixation methods: IMF, miniplates, arch bars
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
Why do surgeons prefer miniplates over 6 weeks of jaw wiring today? Rigid internal fixation holds fragments precisely while letting the patient open, eat and speak - better nutrition, hygiene and comfort. IMF (jaws wired shut) still has roles: condylar fractures, temporary stabilization, or where plating isn't feasible. Students learn fixation as a spectrum: the stiffer the fixation, the earlier the function - and early function heals better.
