Maxillofacial trauma: mandibular fractures — symphysis, angle, condyle
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
A chin blow causes bilateral condylar fractures with an anterior open bite. Why does the bite open in front? The condyles - the jaw's hinges - collapse, letting the back teeth meet while the front drops open; the muscles pull the fractured segments. Students learn the pattern: chin impact travels to condyles (never assume the impact site is the fracture site), and malocclusion maps the fracture - the teeth draw the skeleton's injury.
