Removable appliances: Hawley, expansion plates
Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
Why is a Hawley retainer worn after braces, not during active treatment? The Hawley is mostly passive — its acrylic plate and labial bow hold teeth in their corrected positions while bone and gums reorganize around them (retention phase). It can't deliver the precise 3D forces of fixed braces. Students learn the phase logic: active appliances move teeth, retainers hold them — mixing the roles fails both.
