Study notes
A peanut-eating child collapses — wheezing, hives, hypotension; adrenaline saves. Type I hypersensitivity (IgE-mediated): peanut crosslinks mast-cell IgE — histamine flood → vasodilation, bronchospasm, edema. IM adrenaline reverses all three (vasoconstrict, bronchodilate, reduce edema); antihistamines/steroids are adjuncts. EpiPen carriage + avoidance + action plan is the management. The immune system's overreaction is the disease — adrenaline is the reset button.
