Study notes
A student pulls an all-nighter before exams and blanks on questions studied at 3 AM. Sleep — especially deep NREM and REM — consolidates memory: the hippocampus replays the day's learning to the cortex for long-term storage. Without sleep, 3 AM studying never consolidates — the effort is wasted. Studies show sleep after learning beats extra study hours for recall. The all-nighter is physiologically self-defeating.
