Nose: rhinitis — allergic, vasomotor; nasal polyps

Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) · MBBS

Study notes

Spring brings daily sneezing fits and a blocked nose — allergic rhinitis; intranasal steroids calm it. Allergic rhinitis (IgE — pollen/dust mite: paroxysmal sneezing, itching, watery rhinorrhea, pale boggy turbinates): avoid triggers + intranasal corticosteroids (mainstay) + antihistamines; immunotherapy for severe. Vasomotor (non-allergic — temperature/odor-triggered watery rhinorrhea; ipratropium). Polyps (antrochoanal — single, young, from maxillary antrum; ethmoidal — multiple, adults, allergy/asthma; nasal blockage, anosmia; steroids shrink, FESS removes). The seasonal sneeze is immune overreaction — steroids retrain the nose.
