Study notes
A 2-year-old weighs 60% expected with edema — kwashiorkor; therapeutic feeding starts. Kwashiorkor (protein deficiency — edema, flaky paint dermatosis, hair changes) vs marasmus (energy — severe wasting, no edema, old-man face): both need cautious refeeding (F-75 → F-100 therapeutic feeds; too fast kills — refeeding syndrome). MUAC <11.5 cm flags severe acute malnutrition; community programs (RUTF, growth monitoring) catch early. The weighing scale is the diagnostic — growth faltering is malnutrition's first word.
