Measurement instrumentation: CRO and multimeters

Study notes

Step 1: A CRO shows a sine wave 4 divisions peak-to-peak vertically (2 V/div) and one period spans 5 horizontal divisions (2 ms/div). Find V_pp, V_rms, f. Step 2: V_pp = 4 × 2 = 8 V. Step 3: V_rms = V_pp/(2√2) = 8/2.828 = 2.83 V. Step 4: T = 5 × 2 ms = 10 ms → f = 1/0.010 = 100 Hz. Step 5: If a multimeter on AC volts reads the same signal, expect ~2.83 V — a cross-check between time-domain (CRO) and RMS (meter) views. Result: 8 V peak-to-peak, 2.83 V rms, 100 Hz. The CRO shows the shape; the meter shows the number — together they fully describe the signal.
