Step 1: A Pt100 RTD reads R = 119.4 Ω in an oven. With R₀ = 100 Ω at 0 °C and α = 0.00385/°C, find T. Step 2: R = R₀(1 + αT) → T = (R/R₀ − 1)/α. Step 3: R/R₀ = 1.194 → T = 0.194/0.00385 = 50.4 °C. Step 4: Sensitivity: dR/dT = R₀α = 0.385 Ω/°C — a 0.1 Ω measurement error is only 0.26 °C. Step 5: Compare a thermocouple (S ≈ 41 μV/°C for K-type): 50 °C gives ~2 mV — needs amplification, while the RTD's 19.4 Ω change is easily measured. Result: T ≈ 50.4 °C. RTDs trade the thermocouple's ruggedness for precision — the right transducer for the job.
