Abscisic acid
Plant growth regulators · Biology
Study notes
During a drought, a plant's roots sense drying soil and send abscisic acid up to the leaves — within minutes stomata slam shut, saving the plant's water. In autumn, rising ABA in buds imposes winter dormancy; only prolonged cold degrades it, which is why seeds need 'stratification' (chilling) before they germinate.
