Fibrous root system
Root system · Biology
Study notes
Step 1: A wheat seed is planted in the soil. Step 2: The seed germinates, and the radicle (the primary root) begins to emerge. Step 3: Unlike other plants, the radicle dies or stops growing very quickly. Step 4: Many new roots sprout directly from the base of the stem (the area just above where the root would have been). Step 5: These roots grow thin and long in all directions like a web or a net. Step 6: This cluster of equal-sized roots forms the mature fibrous root system, which helps the wheat plant drink water and stay firm in the topsoil.
