Life Cycle of a Fern Step-by-Step: 1. Start with the adult Fern (Sporophyte). 2. On the back of its leaves, little brown dots (Sori) pop open. 3. Thousands of dust-like Spores fly out into the air. 4. One spore lands on wet, shady soil. 5. It sprouts into a tiny green heart-shaped plant called the Prothallus. 6. The Prothallus grows its own little 'swimming pool' of rainwater. 7. Male cells swim through the water to reach the female spot on the same heart. 8. They fuse together (Fertilization). 9. A brand new baby Fern begins to grow right out of the heart-shaped plant.
