Life cycle of Funaria and Marchantia
Bryophyta · Biology
Study notes
Let's trace the life of Funaria: 1. Start with a green moss plant (Gametophyte, n). 2. It grows male organs (Antheridia) and female organs (Archegonia). 3. Raindrops carry sperm to the egg. 4. Fertilization happens, creating a Zygote (2n). 5. The Zygote turns into a Sporophyte, which looks like a long stalk with a pod at the top. 6. Inside this pod, special cell division (Meiosis) creates thousands of tiny spores (n). 7. The pod bursts. 8. Spores fall on wet ground and grow into a tiny green thread called the Protonema. 9. The Protonema grows into a new leafy moss plant. The cycle is complete!
