Example: You touch a hot pan. Sensory neurons in your finger fire an impulse that travels up your arm to the spinal cord. Interneurons there instantly relay it to motor neurons, which send an impulse back down — your hand jerks away in about 100 milliseconds, before your brain even feels the pain.
