Plant life cycle patterns (haplontic, diplontic, haplo-diplontic)

Angiosperms · Biology

Study notes

Let's look at the Diplontic cycle (Angiosperms/Flowering plants). 1. The big tree is a Sporophyte (2n). 2. Inside the flower, cells divide by Meiosis to make tiny spores. 3. These spores grow into a microscopic Gametophyte (n) (pollen grain or embryo sac). 4. Gametes (n) are made by these small parts. 5. Fertilization happens: Sperm (n) + Egg (n) = Zygote (2n). 6. The Zygote grows back into the big Sporophyte (2n) tree. The cycle repeats.
