Three-kingdom classification

Study notes

Let's trace how Ernst Haeckel would classify an organism found in a pond. Step 1: Look at the organism. If it is a large, stationary green plant, it goes into Kingdom Plantae. Step 2: If it is a fast-moving creature that hunts for food, it goes into Kingdom Animalia. Step 3: If you find something like an 'Amoeba' or 'Euglena' under your microscope, you notice it is very tiny (only one cell). Since it is not a big plant and not a complex animal, you place it in the new third shelf: Kingdom Protista. By creating this third group, Haeckel successfully moved single-celled life out of the plant and animal kingdoms, making the whole system much more accurate for scientists to study.
