Air pollution: primary and secondary pollutants, smog

Environmental Chemistry · Chemistry

Study notes

Why is ozone good up high but bad down low? Step 1: Stratospheric O₃: absorbs UV — protective shield. Step 2: Ground-level O₃: secondary pollutant from NOₓ + VOCs + sunlight. Step 3: Low O₃ damages lungs, crops (oxidant!). Step 4: Same molecule, different altitude — location decides friend or foe!
