Study notes

Why does EDTA treat lead poisoning? Step 1: EDTA⁴⁻ is hexadentate — wraps Pb²⁺ with 6 donor atoms. Step 2: [Pb(EDTA)]²⁻ formation constant ~10¹⁸ — essentially irreversible. Step 3: The chelate is water-soluble → kidneys excrete it. Step 4: Pb²⁺ is pulled from blood and soft tissues — chelation therapy!
