Why does table salt turn a flame yellow? Step 1: Heat excites Na atoms' electrons to higher levels. Step 2: Electrons fall back, emitting 589 nm photons (yellow). Step 3: Each element has unique emission lines (fingerprints). Step 4: Flame photometer measures yellow intensity → [Na⁺]!
