Two identical nails: one kept in dry air, one in a test tube with water and air. After a week, which rusts? Step 1: Rusting needs oxygen AND water together. Step 2: Nail in dry air — oxygen present, water absent → no rust. Step 3: Nail in water + air — both present → brown flaky rust forms. Step 4: A third nail in boiled (air-free) water with oil layer also stays clean. Conclusion: both air and water are necessary for rusting.
