Study notes

Argue whether H belongs with alkali metals or halogens. Step 1: With alkalis: 1s¹ like ns¹; forms H⁺ like Na⁺; good reducing agent. Step 2: With halogens: needs 1 electron for helium config; forms H⁻ (hydrides) like F⁻; H₂ + Cl₂ → 2HCl parallels halogen behaviour. Step 3: Unlike both: H₂ is a gas, forms covalent bonds mostly; tiny, no inner shell. Step 4: Verdict: unique — placed above Li by convention but acknowledged as one-of-a-kind.
