Why does zinc deficiency impair immunity and wound healing? Step 1: Zn²⁺ is a cofactor in 200+ enzymes, including DNA polymerase. Step 2: Immune cells divide rapidly → need DNA synthesis → need Zn. Step 3: Wound healing needs cell proliferation + collagen enzymes (Zn-dependent). Step 4: Low Zn → slow division, weak enzymes → poor immunity, slow healing. Trace but vital!
