Cysts and tumors of jaws: surgical management
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
A large cyst wraps around the inferior alveolar nerve. Why marsupialize instead of enucleating? Complete removal risks nerve damage; marsupialization opens the cyst into the mouth, letting it shrink over months as pressure releases - then smaller, safer enucleation follows. Students learn cyst management as risk-calibrated: the cyst's size and neighbours decide the technique, not the surgeon's preference.
