Orthognathic surgery: indications, procedures — BSSO, Le Fort I
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
A patient has a severe underbite that braces alone cannot fix. What is the combined plan? Orthodontics first aligns teeth to each jaw (decompensation), then BSSO surgery repositions the mandible back (often with Le Fort I for the maxilla), then orthodontics finishes the bite. Students learn orthognathic care as choreography: the orthodontist and surgeon plan the jaw movements together on models and scans before any cut - surgery executes a shared blueprint.
