A patient wants whitening but has untreated caries. Why treat first? Peroxide through carious lesions causes severe sensitivity and the decay progresses hidden under the cosmetic plan - plus existing fillings won't whiten, creating patchwork. Students learn whitening's prerequisites: healthy mouth, realistic shade discussion (whitening lifts stains, doesn't make porcelain-white), sensitivity management - because the disappointed whitening patient was promised what chemistry can't deliver.
