A city generates 1000 tons/day of waste: 50% organic, 20% recyclable, 30% inert. Composting the organic fraction yields 250 tons of compost (50% mass loss). Recycling recovers 200 tons of paper, plastic, metal. Only 300 tons of inert residue needs landfill, cutting disposal by 70%.
