Study notes
An Rh-negative mother delivers an Rh-positive baby; she's given an injection. During delivery, fetal Rh+ red cells can enter the mother's blood, sensitizing her to make anti-D antibodies that would attack her next Rh+ baby (hemolytic disease of the newborn). Anti-D immunoglobulin given within 72 hours mops up fetal cells before sensitization occurs — prevention, not treatment. This is why every pregnant woman's blood group is checked at the first visit.
