Study notes
A patient can't close one eye or smile on one side after a cold night outdoors. This is facial nerve (CN VII) palsy — the nerve supplies all muscles of facial expression. Unlike a stroke (which spares the forehead because of bilateral brain supply), a lower-motor-neuron facial palsy affects the whole half of the face including the forehead — the patient can't wrinkle the forehead, close the eye, or smile on that side. Eye protection matters because the unclosed eye dries out.
